Platoro to Appache Creek – 33 Miles

Platoro is in a canyon 23 miles on a gravel road from highway 17, a scenic byway. If you are in the area I would suggest a drive on 17 and a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad (more on that later). On a side note, I’ve been impressed with the scenic byways in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. They are hidden uncrowded gems through beautiful areas that are perfect for bicycling or to enjoy a Sunday drive.

The ride out of Platoro was an easy 23 miles and we decided to add in more miles including a climb up La Manga Pass. We made it as far as Arapahoe Creek just as the afternoon thunder and rain storms began.

23 miles out of Platoro was along the Conejos River

Crossing into New Mexico. 700 miles to go!!
Cow patty camp #4. You can guess why we named it that
