Day 12 – SWAN RIVER CROSSING TO CEDAR CREEK CAMPGROUND 35 miles

The days started out in the rain and it did not let up until after lunch. We had a significant 6 mile climb on gravel early into the ride. As we started up the climb we were warned by a local that a grizzly sow and her two cubs were spotted on the road we were climbing plus a cougar. Early into the climb we sang, mad noise, and I jingled my bear bell as much as I could. Unfortunately there was an unhappy incident involving a Grizzly and a mountain biker in Glacier National Park recently which has put most riders on high alert.

Most of the rest of the day was rolling downhill on gravel through old growth forrest. We continued to sing even downhill and called out “hey bear” at every blind curve in the road.

In the pictures below you will see we hung out food from a bridge away from the bears. We have an Ursack that is made from bullet proof jacket fiber which is supposed to be near proof. We hang our food or put it in a bear box though.
